Local Updates (24/7) Glenville police warn of phone-based scams Posted on: 10/12/09 Written by: Sean Ahern, Contributing Writer email: aherns@spotlightnews.com Glenville Police are currently investigating a scam involving elderly victims, where suspects pose as relatives requesting money. According to the Glenville Police, there are two cases where victims have received phone calls from a male caller claiming to be the victim’s grandson. The caller stays on the line until the victims does believe that it is their grandson and states that he has been in an accident in Canada and needs money wired to him via Western Union. Through the investigation it has been discovered that the money is going to an address in New Brunswick, Canada, according to police reports. Both cases are exactly the same, scamming the victims over the phone into believing that a family member is in danger. The first victim wired $4,000 to a suspect and the second victim wired $2,500 to the suspect. The second victim claimed that after agreeing to wire the money to who she believed was her grandson, another male got on the phone posing as a police officer, stating that her grandson would not be able to leave Canada until the money was received. The Glenville Police are asking the public to remain aware that this scam is occurring and to be cautious when receiving calls requesting money, asking that the public research and be diligent when receiving such calls to ensure that the person on the other end is who they say they are.
