Having it all

Having it all

I'm the senior regional director of communications for the American Heart Association, and former Spotlighter. But the work that consumes me is that of mother, trying to make sense of the world around us, and testing whether you really can have it all.

Finding contentment at a Mass Pike rest stop

kmccarthy, Sun, May 24th, 2009

I forget so often what really matters. I have fussed this spring over so many things. My to-do list at work gets longer, even though I spend the whole day hard at work. My home gets messier every day, even though I come home from the paying job to work for a few more hours. The economy continues to collapse, although by the looks of the family ledger, we mightily stimulate the economy every week.

But two things happened this week to remind me that really contentment is what I should feel most days. Last Tuesday, my sister-in-law gave birth to Ronan Liam, a wrinkled little fellow with the peculiar man-hands unique to newborns.

On Saturday, we picked our firstborn up at the conclusion of his freshman year of college. That's an incredible thing, because I'd tell you I'm still catching up on sleep from his first weeks with us.

We stopped on the trip back from Boston to fuel up the cars and ourselves, and I emerged back into the warm May sun to see my husband and our two boys chatting and laughing near the car. Really, our boys are men now, but the slow flush of contentment as I looked at them surprised me.

At home that evening, Christopher pulled out his new board game, Settlers of Catan, and the four of us sat at the kitchen table and played for three hours. His unpacked bags and boxes filled up the dining room, and the dishes that hadn't gotten done before we had left that morning remained in the sink.

But my heart was happy as we drew cards and placed our pieces on the board.
