But the work that consumes me is that of mother, trying to make sense of the world around us, and testing whether you really can have it all. kmccarthy, Sun, June 10th, 2007 Wow, how an idea of a perfect weekend changes...it used to be sleeping late, brunch with friends, some afternoon exercise, date night, up really, really late and more sleep. My best-in-a-long-time middle aged weekend came when the weather turned warm. It's been one of those busy springs at our house and the lawn was too long, the screens hadn't gone in yet, and really, the only word to describe the state of the house is "unspeakable." Like the kids' friends come to pick them up and I only open the door a crack and leave these adults on the front porch while I holler to their kids to get going. So ... with full cooperation from my sainted husband, we divvied up the work in the house. I often wish we were one of those Saturday chore families, but we just aren't. The fact that Chris was willing to jump in on this speaks volumes about the state of things... By the end of Saturday, everything was dusted, vacuumed, Lysol'd and scrubbed. AND, all the screens were in ... just in time to hear the baby birds hatching in the shrub outside the dining room window. Sunday morning, we did a philanthropic thing and participated in a 10-mile bike ride to raise money to fight brain tumors. It's been a sad year for us that way; Chris' 58-year-old uncle died of a brain tumor; a good friend's 50-ish brother died of a brain tumor, and one of my favorite people at our church also died of a brain tumor. Another woman we know is recovering from surgery for a brain tumor. So on the most beautiful day imaginable, we headed up to Saratoga to participate in the Team Billy ride - just 10 miles, which for our untrained legs was a lot. We passed the track; we passed farm fields; we looped back for a tour past Saratoga's gorgeous Victorian houses. And, we were home by noon. I gave my boys the afternoon off, but already, can't wait for another good weekend...maybe the overflowing closets next time? blog comments powered by Disqus Archives
