Have you ever looked for a definition of a community event?
We have some great ones here.
They do not have fancy name, at least not that often, but they are worth a lot in our hometown.
These are the events that more people march or take part in, than actually line the street to watch. These are not money-making events with celebrity participants. Heck no. It is about you.
Think about it. Where can you see all your neighbors in one place. Not Walmart, Not the local Home Depot they are too big and not always in town. The old General Store/Post Office disappeared long ago and very few events draw out most of the town.
Niskaday, The Delmar Dash, Founder’s Day in Charlton, Flag Day in Burnt Hills, Malta Community Day and The opening parade at the NYC Ballet in Saratoga Springs are some examples of great community events.
The question in my house for Flag Day in Burnt Hills is: Which group do we want to march with?
Joseph likes his baseball team, Mohawk Honda. Or will it be Cub Scouts this year?
JW used march with Wrestling – this year it is up in the air. It could be with his baseball team (Emrichs), or it could be the 13-year-olds-who-play-video-games-and-are-real-cool-team (this one should form soon).
Julie and I will probably be with Spotlight, but we will see.
The bottom line is these events define us by where we live. They are the definition of what we do by showing with whom and where we do it.
I think we all need to remember where we are from and celebrate it.
See you there.
