![]() Sports ScrapsThe blog is an extension of my "From the Sports Desk" column in Spotlight Newspapers. The focus will be on Capital District sports, but occasionally there will be national or international items. Sports Scraps will be updated two to three times per week, so it will be more timely than the weekly column that appears in all the print editions. Putting Section 2 on the Web
rjonas, Wed, April 30th, 2008 There are some good Web sites for local high school sports these days ... beyond this one, of course. There's section2harrier.com and finishright.com for cross country and track and field, section2swim.com for swimming (naturally), capitalregionsoccer.com for boys soccer (no girls soccer, though) and cdhshl.org for hockey. They all offer scores, schedules and leaderboards so you can follow what's going on in Section 2. However, there are some sports that are under-represented on the Web, and that needs to be fixed. For instance, there's a Web site for Section 2 football that offers schedules and news, but no results or statistics. It would be nice if it could expand to include those categories so that football fans have a central site to visit, instead of going to the links page to find news sites for that information. (Side note: section2football.com does not have a link to our Web site.) At least there's a Web site for Section 2 football. There are no Web sites for Section 2 baseball, softball, basketball, wrestling or lacrosse. Those are five major high school sports in this region that do not have a central Web site for people to visit and see the latest standings, scores or statistics. There's a logical explanation for this, and it centers around finding some people dedicated to operating such a Web site. The reason why a Web site like section2harrier.com works is because there's a person (Jonathan Broderick) who is willing to sit at a computer for hours compiling information from cross country and track meets and putting the results on the site. It would be nice if a sport like baseball or lacrosse could have someone as dedicated as Broderick to operate a Web site. The trouble is, how many people have the time to get all the scores and statistics from every football, basketball, baseball, softball or lacrosse game, organize them and put them on the Web? There are more than 80 schools in Section 2 that play basketball, baseball and/or softball. That means on any given day, there could be more than 40 games taking place. That's an awful lot to deal with for anybody. Just ask anyone who's worked on a sports desk at a daily newspaper on a Friday night during basketball season. It takes a sharp mind to keep every result straight. And if the person running the Web site has a day job (as probably all of them around here do), to have them get the information from every game might be a lot to ask. Still, if there were some dedicated people out there willing to give up part of their weeks to give Section 2 sports like baseball, softball, basketball and lacrosse a proper home on the Web, I'm certain there would be some grateful fans (namely the athletes' parents) who would appreciate their efforts.
