![]() Sports ScrapsThe blog is an extension of my "From the Sports Desk" column in Spotlight Newspapers. The focus will be on Capital District sports, but occasionally there will be national or international items. Sports Scraps will be updated two to three times per week, so it will be more timely than the weekly column that appears in all the print editions. Blame it on the rain
rjonas, Wed, July 22nd, 2009 There's only eight days left in the New York Collegiate Baseball League season, and the East Division teams are scrambling to make up for lost time -- thanks to Mother Nature. Due to all the rain of the past seven weeks, teams like the Albany Dutchmen, Saratoga Phillies and Glens Falls Golden Eagles have to cram as many games in as possible to make up for the rainouts (the Dutchmen lost eight games to rain as of Monday). The one thing that can't be made up is all the revenue lost due to the rainouts. Not that NYCBL teams make a ton of money on game day, but losing home games due to the weather does hurt in the financial column. No ticket sales (or donations, as in the case of the Phillies) and no concession sales on enough days can hurt a team's chances of survival -- even in a league where the players aren't paid. Hopefully, there won't be any more rainouts the rest of the way so that these teams can take in as much revenue as possible. CATEGORY: Baseball
