The Shakers subscribed to the ideals of racial equality, something that was not accepted by a majority of their contemporaries. From accepting converts from the African American community, to participating in the Underground Railroad, the Albany Shakers demonstrated one of the basic beliefs of Shakerism: equality. Join us as Shaker Heritage Society director Starlyn D’Angelo gives a lecture exploring the stories and experiences of African American Shakers in honor of Black History Month.
