According to the law, the wireless provider has no legal obligation to force payment, but the wireless provider will give the county the name and address of any customer who is not paying the tax.
The money collected from this tax will be used only for eligible wireless 9-1-1 service costs. Any excess money that is accumulated from this tax will carry over to the next fiscal year.
Chairwoman of the Legislature, Susan Savage, D-Niskayuna, said this piece of legislation could save lives.
"If there is ever someone in the state of New York in need of assistance, this money will be well spent because it will have saved a life," she said. ""
