"The most significant thing they do is lengthen and grow the rough," said Philo.
Philo will have some professional guidance during the PGA Championship. His sister, LPGA Tour veteran Laura Diaz, will be his caddy.
"She's very good," Philo said. "Her caddying skills are exceptional because she is a player. To be able to see the course as a player is very helpful."
Diaz has caddied for her brother at previous PGA Tour events, and Philo has returned the favor several times for his sister.
"We may be a little more relaxed, which is an intangible that may be hard to measure," Philo said.
Between now and the PGA Championship, Philo plans to compete in some regional events " most notably, the New York State Open in two weeks at Bethpage.
"I haven't played Bethpage since I was a boy, so I'm looking forward to seeing it again," he said.
