NISKAYUNA: Schools get state windfall

Under the tentative fiscal plan, Niskayuna would see changes made to the district's technology curriculum that would include the introduction of several new courses under the umbrella of Project Lead the Way, a pre-engineering program taking advantage of the school system's links to General Electric's nearby research facilities. The district would also restore a director of counseling position that was dropped last year as a cost-cutting measure and bring back professional development activities aimed at improving the quality of teaching.

Along with giving the go-ahead to an overall budget that covers the district's operating expenses, the school board also approved a $577,475 bus proposition to pay for the purchase of five full-size buses and two mini-buses. Both the transportation proposal and the district budget will go before the voters on Tuesday, May 15. Due to state aid formulas, the bus proposition will not affect the local tax rate. ""
