Without Ciccotti's help, it would have never happened, said J. Brain Hogan, town board member and executive director of the Colonie Youth Center.
The center oversees the recreational facility.
"Rudy's motivation behind his support for the youth center is for the kids. He's got a soft spot in his heart for children. Without it, the center would absolutely not exist," said Hogan.
Since opening its doors in January, the center has filled more than 3,300 family memberships"about 6,000 members total"nearly meeting the 4,000 family membership cap. The center's goal is to hit that cap by 2008.
In its first month alone, the facility saw 20,000 members come through its doors. In six months since opening the center has exceeded many people's expectations, said Hogan.
The center features two full gymnasiums, a one-eighth mile, elevated walking/running track, a fitness center and community rooms with kitchens.
The center also features a multifaceted aquatic complex that includes a wave pool, lazy river and at its center, a multi-loop, 20-foot slide. The center also features activities including swimming lessons, water aerobics, yoga, stroller fitness and volleyball classes.
The center is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays, and 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends. It is located off of 30 Aviation Road. For information, call 436-9596 or visit www.colonieyouthcenter.org.
