"We had a lot of good applicants, which made the decision that much harder," she said.
Zunker currently teaches marketing and tourism management courses as an adjunct faculty member at the University of South Carolina and is immediate past president of the South Carolina Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus.
He said he will not look to continue his teaching endeavors any time soon after the move. "It's something I've enjoyed," he said. "But I'm going to have to focus on the job at hand and get to know the community."
Before Columbia, Zunker was director of sales for Daufuskie Island Resort and Club in Hilton Head, S.C., and a Pinehurst Company Resort owned and operated by Club Corp; and spent 11 years in sales and marketing with Wintergreen Resort, a four-season resort located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. He has worked at state tourism offices in Virginia and his home state of Minnesota. Zunker holds a bachelor's in journalism from the University of Minnesota.
Zunker has scheduled a brief visit to the Spa City during the week of Aug. 6.He will join the bureau on Aug 20 to head up a staff of seven which has set records each year during the last decade for increased convention bookings.
