Past Ms. Altamont winner says competition is all about confidence

Aside from appearances at the fair, the girls also make a number of appearances throughout the Capital District, and participate in many community service events and activities.

Over the past year, DeSarbo has marched in three Memorial Day parades, was on a float for the Holiday Light Parade in Schenectady, and marched in Albany's St. Patrick's Day parade. She also made appearances at Canal Fest in Schenectady, on the USS Slater in Albany, presented Easter baskets to children in the emergency room at local hospitals, and read books to children at the Byrne Library.

Although DeSarbo can't run again because she has already won a title in the oldest age group, she encourages girls to try it out.

"It's a chance to express yourself, give back to the community, and overcome your fears," she said.
