Niskayuna group pushes volunteer awards program

"When I was growing up, I really wasn't interested in this type of thing, but when my children were born, I became involved in the community because I wanted to be a role model for them," Mondello said. "Now they are in their 20s and there are times when I hear that they donated some clothes to someone in need or became involved in something to help another person. It really stuck with them.

"Our young people and our teenagers are our future," said Mondello.

"Whatever we can do to encourage them is a good thing."

Locally, N-CAP will distribute information about the volunteer awards program throughout Niskayuna schools when the academic year begins. Those interested in obtaining detailed information about the required service hours can contact the national program at its Web site, www.presidentialseviceawards.gov. ""
