Facility design contract gets OK

McCabe said that budgeting that $500,000 pushed the city's tax increase next year from 5.5 percent to more than 8 percent, but getting the new public safety building was worth it.

Commissioner of Public Safety Ron Kim emphasized the need for the facility and noted a recent ruling by the state Division of Human Rights that said probable cause exists that the city "has engaged in or is engaging in" unlawful discrimination of its police department's female worker because of inadequate facilities.

LaBella will be paid out of $1 million that was budgeted last year for design of a new building.""
