BALLSTON SPA: Village prepares for summer

Get ready to make a splash in Ballston Spa.

The village's municipal pool next to Kelley Park is scheduled to re-open for the season on the weekend of June 9 and 10.

There's still a great deal of maintenance work to be done, but that's our goal, said Mayor John Romano at the village board meeting Monday, May 14.

Once open, families can take a dip in the pool during the remaining school year on weekends from noon to 8 p.m., and 3:30 to 7 p.m. weekdays. All swimming hours are weather contingent.

Kids need instruction on freestyle and the backstroke? Registration for swimming lessons will take place June 23 and 24.

"We provided lessons for more than 500 children per week last year," said village trustee Donna Thomas, who also serves as the board's liaison with the pool staff. "We expect to give even more lessons this summer."

Swimming lessons will begin July 2.

In other news, village trustees are advising residents there will no longer be curbside pick-up of large piles of yard debris, particularly if they are placed in plastic bags. County Waste will haul away grass clippings in biodegradable paper bags, or receptacles 32 gallons or fewer.

"We need to be in compliance with new state and federal storm water mandates," said Romano. "We'll pick up yard waste with the purpose of ensuring pollutants don't get into local streams and ponds."

In the fall, downed leaves will also be picked up curbside.

Trustees said, however, in the event of a severe storm, crews will go out and cart away downed branches.

Finally, trustees appointed Jim Taisey to the Board of Assessment Review. Taisey, a longtime resident and former owner of the Apple Tree Bed and Breakfast, invested an enormous amount of energy and money restoring The Medbery Inn and Spa on Front Street to its former elegance.

"Jim has a good feel for the community," said Romano. ""
