Mayor Valerie Keehn served on the Ad Hoc Committee for the Future of Racing, which last year recommended Excelsior Racing, one of the three bidders up against NYRA, be awarded New York's racing franchise.
Keehn said she was more concerned with the details of the contract than which operator won the franchise. She said she has clearly stated her position about elements that should be written into the franchise contract.
Keehn, who will face Boyd in the Sept. 18 primary for the Democratic line, said her concerns are having one franchise run both racing and gaming, retaining the exclusive August meet in Saratoga, and improving conditions for backstretch workers. She met with officials from the New York Thoroughbred Horseman's Association on the backstretch at the end of August.""
