GUILDERLAND: District picks new superintendent

At a special meeting held Thursday, Sept. 20, the Guilderland Board of Education approved the appointment of John McGuire to the position of superintendent of schools. McGuire will be replacing the current superintendent, Gregory Aidala, upon his retirement from the district in mid-November.

McGuire comes to Guilderland with more than 30 years of experience in the field of education. Most recently, he has served as the superintendent of schools for the Greenwich Central School District. Prior to that, McGuire was the assistant superintendent of educational programs and instruction at Bethlehem Central School District. He has also served as an administrator in the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk and Shenendehowa school districts. McGuire began his career as an education specialist in the U.S. Air Force and as a special education teacher in the Rochester City Schools.

He is actively involved in numerous professional organizations including the New York State Council of School Superintendents, the Superintendent Development Program at SUNY Oswego, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and the Capital Area School Development Association.

McGuire is a graduate of the State University of New York at Geneseo, where he received a bachelor's degree in special education and psychology. His master of education degree is from the University of Illinois, and he also completed graduate-level coursework at Syracuse University.

We are very pleased to have John McGuire coming to Guilderland as our new superintendent, said school board President Richard Weisz. "His combination of experience, his track record of success as an assistant superintendent and superintendent, and his leadership skills will be a good match for the district."

In addition, Weisz made note of the many individuals who contributed to the search process.

"I want to thank the community and staff for their involvement," he added.

Throughout the next few weeks, McGuire will be working closely with the current superintendent to ensure a smooth transition of leadership. His new duties will officially begin in mid November.""
