Savage said she thought it was important for people who haven't been to downtown Schenectady in a long time to know various safety controls are in place.
"This is not an area where people parking their vehicles need to be concerned during the day or in the evening," said Savage.
All of the surface lots are operated by parking attendants during daytime hours.
Metroplex assumed control of the downtown parking garage and surface lots in 2004 from the city of Schenectady for $1 million over 20 years. Metroplex then made improvements totaling approximately $1 million to the parking lots, including reconstruction, landscaping and restriping.
Metroplex purchased an eighth surface parking lot behind Center City which will add an additional 150 spaces to the more than 2,000 spaces currently operated by Metroplex.
Gillen said Metroplex will continue to evaluate the city's parking situation and may add more lots in the future.
"We may look at a lot on lower State Street where there could be a need for an additional surface lot," said Gillen, who noted he was also looking at the feasibility of other parking sites.
