School mourns popular teacher

Top district officials had nothing but words of praise for all she accomplished in her 57 years.

"Susan Burke truly cared for her students and colleagues, and worked tirelessly to help ensure them the best possible school experience," said Luke Rakoczy, Van Antwerp principal. "As principal, I could always depend on her for sound, even-handed, well-thought out advice.

"Our school is far better for her having taught here," Rakoczy said. "We will miss her tremendously."

Superintendent Kevin Baughman joined in mourning for Burke saying, "Susan's enthusiasm for teaching and love of children and colleagues only grew with time. As a parent, teacher and person, Sue was a role model we all can learn from."

Burke's funeral was held on Thursday, Jan. 17, in Latham. She is survived by two sons who live in California, Andy and Kevin, and a daughter, Jennifer, who is a middle school teacher in the area. Those interested may donate to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborn Road, Loudonville 12211 in her memory. ""
