Some of the other programs include Sail, an academic support system that provides a coach who works with the student during tutorial time, some class time and even after school. This program works to teach parents how to check for homework, encourage attendance and the importance of communication between educators, students and parents. A second program is Discover, which is designed to help students who experience a large number of behavioral referrals. These students are together all day in a classroom, except for lunch, technology and foreign-language classes. The semester-long program promotes team leadership, personal and social acceptance, and a positive personal image.
Elliot told the board a story about a recent incident with a substitute teacher that helped put into perspective how successful the programs are.
"I recently had a sub in who left me a note saying the students greeted her with handshakes and practically ran the room. It was the best experience she had had as a teacher," said Elliot.""
