Guilderland prepares for girls lacrosse regional

The Guilderland girls la-crosse team is back in the Class A regionals.

After beating Shaker 18-10 for their second consecutive Section II title last Thursday, the Lady Dutch (20-0) face Section I champion Lakeland-Panas in Wednesday's regional at the University at Albany. Lakeland-Panas defeated Guilderland in last year's regional.

Experience is a huge thing, and I hope the experience plays out for us this year, said Guilderland coach Gary Chatnik. "I think it served us well in the Sectional finals, and hopefully it will serve us well again Wednesday night."

The Lady Dutch already own a 10-5 regular season win against Lakeland-Panas, but Chatnik isn't dismissing the Section I power.

"You know, everyone gets better as the season goes on, so hopefully we'll be up to the task again," he said.

Guilderland had little trouble dismissing Shaker (16-3) in last Thursday's final. After building a 5-4 lead, the Lady Dutch closed the first half on an 8-1 run to put the game out of the Blue Bison's reach.

"We went on one of our typical runs," said Chatnik. "It was fun to watch."

Chelsey Newman led Guilderland's attack with six goals. Bridget Daley contributed four goals, while Danielle Tetreault added a hat trick.

Though his team hasn't played since last Thursday's Sectional final, Chatnik said the time off shouldn't hurt Guilderland.

"You need a day or two to wind down ... so I don't think it will be a big deal," he said.

If Guilderland beats Lake-land-Panas Wednesday, it will play the Section IX champion this weekend for the right to advance to the state semifinals in Cortland.

"I think we just want to advance, so our goal is to beat whoever is on the field," said Chatnik.""
