Candidate keeps low Election Day profile

Voelker worked as a commercial engineer, news and sports anchorman, general manager and vice president of the minor league baseball team the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs and associate marketing director at the University at Albany.

If he had won, Voelker said he would have brought the same team mentality he had in his previous jobs to his office.

He said he did not expect to win the election, but it served as a learning experience. He learned that there are other like-minded people who want responsible government.

"Running was the right thing to do. We need to change the culture of our Legislature and how they go about answering our problems," he said.

He said having his 7-year-old son see his dad's name on the ballot was just as important to him as any other part of the election.

Unofficial polling numbers show Breslin won the race by racking up 94,005 votes to Voelker's 10,372 votes. ""
