U.S. officials talk passport rules at airport

Q: What are the benefits of having a passport card as opposed to a passport?

A: (Wedel) For people who make the border crossing more frequently, it can be cost effective, but it is not valid for international travel.

According to the U.S. Department of State's Web site. http://travel.state.gov, a passport card costs $45 for a first-time adult holder; $35 for all minor applicants under age 16; and $20 for each renewal.

The Web site also states that the card has the same time period of validity as the U.S. passport book, which is 10 years for an adult and five years for minors.

A U.S. passport book costs $100 for a person older than 16 and $85 for a person under 16 years of age. Passport book renewal costs $75.
