Shenendehowa gets back on track

After consecutive losses to Niskayuna and Guilderland, the Shenendehowa boys lacrosse team got back on track with a 14-7 victory over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Tuesday in a Suburban Council game.

Joe Gaug scored four goals for the Plainsmen (4-3 league, 5-3 overall), who built a 7-2 halftime lead. Anthony Zappone netted two goals and two assists, while Mike Jenkins tallied twice. Brendan Dion added a goal and two assists.

Kyle Jones and Ian Schwan each scored twice for the Spartans (1-6, 4-6). Jones also had two assists, and Schwan added an assist.

Shen entered the game off a 13-2 loss to Guilderland last Thursday. The Plainsmen struck first on a goal by Zapppone, but the Dutchmen (6-1, 9-1) scored the next nine goals to take control.

Bryan Dyer led Guilderland with four goals, while E.J. Genzano chipped in with a hat trick. Rory Nunamacher and Anthony Powers each added two goals and three assists.

Dion had Shen's other goal, and goaltender Robert Wardwell stopped six shots.

BH-BL picked up a 10-7 non-league victory over South Glens Falls last Saturday to improve its record outside of the Suburban Council to 3-0. Cole Godfrey led the Spartans with three goals, and goaltender Noah Connor made 10 saves in the rematch of last year's Section II, Class B championship game.

In other boys lacrosse action, Ballston Spa (3-5, 4-6) picked up a big win by defeating Shaker 9-5 Tuesday. The Scotties jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter and added three goals in the third quarter to seal the victory.

Mike Boisvert and Troy Gargiulo each had two goals and two assists, and Greg Dunlavey added a pair of goals for Ballston Spa. Goaltender Matt Plombino had 17 saves on 22 shots for the Scotties.

Ballston Spa had been on a two-game losing streak entering Tuesday's game against Shaker. The Scotties fell to Columbia 12-4 last Thursday and to Schenectady 11-3 last Saturday.
