Bethlehem Chamber dinner honors community members

Roger and Sherley Hannay live and work in the southern Albany County town of Westerlo and run Hannay Reels.

Roger Hannay's grandfather Clifford Hannay began the company in 1933.

"When we think of reels, maybe we think of a fishing reel or garden hose reels," DeLaney said. "Hannay Reels are all these small reels and on up to the largest reels such as those on our community fire trucks, reels which you can bet had their origins in Westerlo."

Fritts graciously accepted the citizen's award.

"Awards don't always go to well known and recognized people, we often honor people who quietly work behind the scenes getting the job done, giving back to the community while most of us don't even know what they're up to," DeLaney said. "Our citizen of the year is one of those people, someone quietly making our community special and her efforts are just as effective and just as important."

Fritts is part of Bethlehem's Adopt-a-Family program and arranges its volunteers and sponsors, as well as the purchase and delivery of a number of goods. It is a completely confidential program that takes hundreds of hours by many volunteers.""
