Niskayuna girls get by Burnt Hills

Niskayuna and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake waged a physical battle in last Friday's Suburban Council North Division girls basketball game.

When the dust settled, Niskayuna prevailed 51-47, thanks to a strong effort at the free throw line. The Silver Warriors (5-3 league, 8-3 overall) made 21 of their 24 foul shots, while the Spartans (0-7, 1-10) drained only seven of their 15 attempts.

Lindsay Mayo scored 12 points to lead three Niskayuna players in double figures. Ashley McCaughan and Lisa Rufer each added 11 points, with nine of McCaughan's 11 points coming from the foul line.

Jenna Juron had 19 points, and Georgina Farrow contributed 15 points for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

In other girls basketball action last Friday, Mohonasen remained alone atop the Suburban Council South Division with a 54-38 victory over Columbia.

The Mighty Warriors (7-1, 10-1) built a 25-12 halftime lead on the Blue Devils (3-6, 5-8) and never looked back as they maintained their one-game lead over Bethlehem in the division standings.

Dayna Lashin scored 18 points, Michelle Aviza chipped in 17 points and Ashley Tallman added 12 points for Mohonasen. Gabrielle Regan's 12 points paced Columbia.

Schenectady Christian rallied to tie Canajoharie at the end of regulation, but the Cougars shut out the Falcons 4-0 in overtime to pull out a 52-48 victory in last Friday's Western Athletic Conference game in Scotia.

Canajoharie (5-2, 5-5) used a 23-10 second quarter to build a 25-19 halftime lead. Schenectady Christian (2-4, 6-5) chipped away at the deficit and pulled even with Canajoharie with a 12-7 fourth quarter before the Cougars took control in overtime.

Emilie Liddle had 15 points, and Mackenzie Stahler chipped in 11 points for Canajoharie. Rachael Brush and Ashlyn Slater each scored 18 points for Schenectady Christian.

Schalmont had a hard time dealing with Mechanicville's balanced attack in a 40-32 Colonial Council loss last Friday in Rotterdam.
