Teen wins New York pageant

She had gone before the New York Legislature representing her youth group to talk to Assemblyman Bob Reilly, D-Newtonville. A few days later, the assemblyman surprised Hoffman at school with a proclamation in her honor for the work she had done and for becoming the 2009 Miss New York National Teenager.

The proclamation reads: "A 16-year-old sophomore at Shaker High School, Kelly Hoffman, is a young woman of singular distinction and superlative ability who has established a purposefulness of life rarely achieved in youthful years."

Hoffman said her pageant days are not over. She plans to compete in the National American Miss Pageant against pageant winners from every state in the country in a competition in Nashville, Tenn., later this summer.

When Hoffman is not competing in pageants, she said, she participates in the drama club at Shaker High School, as well as the school's Key Club and broadcasting club. She also performs in several shows throughout the year and enjoys playing the cello.

She plans to apply for college shortly and said she wants to major in broadcast journalism.""
