Cuts still possible in Spa City

Johnson said the new funds shouldn't cause the council to lose sight of the ultimate goal"closing the gap"and said it should force the council as a whole to take a careful look at the financial impact of mid-year layoffs, saying "We have to be dead certain any cuts to any jobs are absolutely necessary."

One cut has been heavily thrown around but is exactly what he means by "unnecessary cuts" and that's the nearly $200,000 in cuts to the recreation department, which would put an end to various children programs like Camp Saradac.

"Shutting down [the camp] would save the city [only] $38,000 but deprive 400 city children of summer recreation," said Johnson.

Another budget workshop will be held on Tuesday, April 14, at 6 p.m. and the council will next meet on Tuesday, April 20, at 7 p.m.
