"I am honored to be a part of the medical team helping this smart, good-natured and courageous young man take on an appearance that allows him to function more normally in society and meet his potential," said Capek. "There has been a significant improvement in Mo's appearance over the past four surgeries, and I expect this upcoming procedure to build on that progress."
Before surgeries, Mohammad had no eye socket on the right side of his face and his only eye was at his temple. There was a mild resemblance to a nose, but no nasal passages were present. Also, his mouth was at a 45-degree angle.
After surgeries Mohammad has a prosthetic right eye including tear ducts created by ophthalmologist Dr. George Stasior of Latham in 2008. Also, Mohammad was excited to be wearing glasses now because he has enough of a nose to set them on.
A scar-free and perfect face might not be in Mohammad's future, but Capek said the goal remains to get him as close to a normal life as possible.
