Barking up the right tree

Estra's office makes sure to follow up on visits with a phone call a few days later to see how pets are adjusting to new medicines or recovering from a surgery.

That approach seems to be working. Canterbury has thrived even through the recession.

"We certainly appreciate that people's disposable income goes towards their pets," Estra said.

But now that she's made a success of Canterbury Animal Hospital (the name coming from the well-known Geoffrey Chaucer tale"or in this case, "tail") Estra figures she's here to stay.

Estra and her staff will be celebrating the office's fifth anniversary with an open house on Saturday, Aug. 13. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the public is invited to stop in for a tour and meet-and-greet and even a pet-owner portrait with local photographer Linda Conley. There will also be a Mohawk Hudson River Humane Society Adoption Clinic, raffles and door prizes (including year supplies of pet medications and foods).

The practice in the past has held community events like cancer fundraisers and Halloween costume contests.

Canterbury Animal Hospital can be found online through Facebook and at canterburyvet.com, where there is more information on the practice and even tales of some of the interesting surgeries Dr. Estra has performed at her practice. The offices are located at 88 Delaware Avenue.""
