Brent Steuerwald makes 2011 his last season

"I'm going to call it, 'It's Not Easy Being Green,'" Steuerwald said, which elicited a laugh from the audience gathered at the press conference.

Ultimately, though, Steuerwald acknowledged that the hardest part will be walking away from the game that he spent 55 years of his life working as a coach.

"Probably that first year will be extremely difficult for me," he said. "I'm horrible at not doing anything, and I'll have to find something else to do."

The Shen football program will face its own challenges in 2012 as a new person takes over for Steuerwald.

"What we want to try to do is the same as at the end of every year," said Culnan. "We'll do an evaluation of the coaching staff. Then, we'll post the job and look both inside and outside the program for a replacement.

"On a personal note, I don't want someone to come in and feel like he has to be another Brent Steuerwald," he added. I would want whoever it is to be his own man."

Steuerwald said he believes that the program that he built will continue to thrive after this season.

"The strength of the program will continue. It's built around a lot of tradition [and] a lot of successful efforts by the kids and coaches," he said.

As for this season, Steuerwald said he's looking forward to what lies ahead for the Plainsmen.

"This year becomes special for me [and] special for the kids," said Steuerwald. "We have a talented group. We're going to give it every effort we can.""
