The game looked like it might go extra innings when Alverson strode to the plate with two outs and Richard Drum standing on second base. Alverson hit a sharp grounder past the Grand Forks shortstop, and Drum motored around third and scored the winning run.
The Bulldogs can clinch a berth in the championship round of the World Series with a win in one of their last two games -- Sunday's contest against Cranston (R.I.) or Monday's game against Meridian (Idaho). Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
Guilderland -- the Capital District's other representative in the Babe Ruth World Series -- recorded its first win of the tournament Saturday by beating Glen Allen (Va.) 5-2.
Guilderland (1-1) scored three times in the bottom of the second inning and added two runs in the fourth to pull out the victory.
Ryan Cullam led Guilderland with a two-run double, and Brandon Peda added an RBI single.
