Girls soccer: Schalmont duo earns top state honors

Florio shares Player of Year award; Caschera earns coaching accolade

Schalmont defender Taylor Florio and head coach Angelo Caschera received the state's highest honors by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports.

Florio was named the Class B Co-Player of the Year with Lowville's Taylor Haenlin, and Caschera received Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Sabres to their first state title.

Florio and striker Megan Strijek were chosen as first team all-stars, while Alexsandria Cardinal was a second team all-state selection. Diana DiCocco was named a fifth team all-star.

Several Suburban Council players received all-state honors. They included the following:

Class AA

Second team: Liz Rogan (Saratoga) goaltender and Meghan Doyle (Niskayuna) forward.

Third team: Tara Teal (Bethlehem) forward, Demi Feder (Ballston Spa) defender and Katie Nickles (Bethlehem) goaltender.

Fourth team: Kristen Connors (Shenendehowa) forward and Isabella Wager (Saratoga) midfielder.

Fifth team: Stephanie Church (Shaker) forward.

Sixth team: Shannon McMillan (Shen) midfielder and Laurie Knapp (Guilderland) forward

Class A

Second team: Morgan Burchhardt (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) forward.

Third team: Nicole Shively (BH-BL) defender.

Scotia-Glenville's Silvana Giavanonne was named a fourth team all-star in Class A.
