Tuesday roundup: Defending champion Shaker wins big in opener

Woods paces Bison against Ballston Spa

The Shaker girls basketball team began its season Tuesday by beating Ballston Spa 57-20 in a Suburban Council North Division game in Latham.

The defending Section II Class AA champions bolted out to a 17-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in earning their first win of the season.

Lauren Woods scored 25 points for Shaker, which played the game without Mackenzie and Madison Rowland. Shanaya Roberts contributed seven points.

Boys basketball

Bethlehem used a big third quarter to defeat Averill Park 79-53 in Tuesday's Suburban Council South Division boys basketball game in Delmar.

Leading 30-26 at halftime, the Eagles flew out of the gate in the third quarter as they outscored the Warriors 30-14. The burst gave Bethlehem a comfortable cushion to work with the rest of the night.

Matt O'Keefe led a balanced Bethlehem attack with 15 points. Nathan Kane made three three-point shots on his way to a 14-point night, while Casey McGraw, Myles Bergere and Connor Morelli each added 11 points.

Boys swimming

The Shenendehowa boys swim team began its 2011-12 dual meet season by beating Niskayuna 102-79 Tuesday in Clifton Park.

Ryan Gordon, Taylor Nichols and Eric Tsui each won two individual events for the Plainsmen. Gordon took first place in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles, Nichols won the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle and Tsui finished first in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke.

Ryan Burke (50 freestyle), Josh Dodway (diving) and Evan Melby (100 breaststroke) had victories for Niskayuna.

In other boys swim meet action, Bethlehem eased past Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 105-76, and Albany Academy defeated Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk 114-69.

Gunnar Zemering and Alex Lednev each won two events to lead Bethlehem past BH-BL. Zemering finished first in the 50 and 100 freestyles, while Lednev won the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke. Ryan Frederiks (200 freestyle), James Starr (diving) and Brian Negri (100 breaststroke) also had first-place performances for the Eagles.

Tim Monaghan (100 butterfly) and Brandon Beaudoin (500 freestyle) won individual events for BH-BL.

Leyton Spencer (200 individual medley) and Westley Costanzo (100 breaststroke) had wins for RCS in its meet against Albany Academy.
