Around 1,600 Bethlehem property owners will be receiving amended tax bills in the mail after a clerical error resulted in a miscalculation of taxes for the North Bethlehem and Slingerlands fire districts.
Supervisor Sam Messina said the mistake caused bills to be off by as much as $300 or $400. Residents should be receiving the new, lower bills soon, if they haven't already.
"A clerical error was made here, and we discovered it and have been talking with the county about that," Messina said. "My conversations with the county indicate that it happens fairly regularly."
He added the town will have extra sets of eyes reviewing the bills to make sure figures are correct. Taxes are due by Jan. 31. ""
