Before the incident, he said, he was working out and didn't feel well. After working out he went to get gas and that is when it struck. Within a minute, he said, CPR was performed on him.
An average CPR training course is done within four to five hours, said Marmo.
"This is not an unfunded mandate in our opinion," said Marmo. "If we spread that out over a school year, it could be 15 minutes a day."
The Town of Colonie has pushed to adhere to the AHA guidelines, said Katherine McCarthy, spokeswoman for AHA, which has resulted in a good survival rate for heart attacks.
"It can happen to anyone and just doing those chest compressions keeps the blood flowing and it increases the chances of circulation," said McCarthy. "If everyone graduates high school with just that basic knowledge they have a much better chance at saving a life."
