— The inspection is about 75 percent over, with Stratton planning to tour a portion in Washington, Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 3 and 4.

Stratton said his observations so far have convinced him that the canal continues to be an asset to the state.

“The New York State canal system has been going 187 years nonstop and the Erie Canal is of course the grandfather of them all,” said Stratton. “I’ve been fortunate to be able to see this and tremendously enlightened that we have such a great governor who is so supportive of our canal systems.”
