Mercy built another big lead in the third game, and this time the Monarchs made it hold up as they won 25-19. But BH-BL opened the fourth game on a 6-1 run and never let go of the momentum as it clinched the state title with a 25-18 victory.

Valade led the Spartans with 15 kills and eight digs, while Ziskin contributed 37 assists, six digs and three blocks. Freshman Jessica Dillon chipped in with nine kills, and Siena Wilder led the defensive effort with 28 digs.

"I just cannot belive the defense my team played," said Bynon. "I can't tell you how many times my kids got to the ball when it almost hit the floor."

BH-BL reached the state final by posting a 5-1 record in pool play Saturday. The Spartans swept their games against Mercy and Section IX champion Cornwall before splitting their two games with Long Island champion Kings Park.
