The Shaker boys cross country team did what it couldn’t do last year – win the Nike Team Regional.
Four Blue Bison finished in the top 25 overall to help Shaker defeat Fayetteville-Manlius 78-93 for the New York team title Saturday at Bowdoin State Park and earn a trip to this weekend’s national championships in Portland, Ore.
Mike Libruk led Shaker with a second-place finish in a time of 16:03.8, less than five seconds behind individual champion Nick Ryan of Fayetteville-Manlius. The Syracuse-area school also had a top-10 runner in Matt Deyo (seventh place, 16:15.6), but Shaker had three runners cross the finish line before Fayetteville-Manlius’ third runner completed the course.
Christian Delago placed 10th with a time of 16:23.3 for the Blue Bison. Jon Vallecorsa was 21st with a time of 16:41.8, and Ethan Hausamann finished 24th with a time of 16:48.0. Ryan Recchia (60th place, 17:19.3) rounded out Shaker’s top five runners.
Saturday’s victory marked the second straight win in a statewide meet for the Blue Bison. Shaker also took the team title at the Federation Meet after placing third to Fayetteville-Manlius and Rush-Henrietta at the state public school championships.
