Tuesday roundup: Bethlehem boys tie Niskayuna

Ballston Spa needs OT to edge Averill Park

Bethlehem remained the lone undefeated Suburban Council boys soccer team after playing Niskayuna to a scoreless tie Tuesday in Niskayuna.

The Eagles (7-0-2) out-shot the Silver Warriors (3-4-3) 7-2, but Niskayuna goaltender Christian Esposito stopped every shot he faced to earn the shutout. Bethlehem keeper Alex Kessler needed only two saves to do the same.

In other boys soccer action, Ballston Spa needed overtime to defeat Averill Park 4-3, and Guilderland edged Saratoga Springs 3-2.

Averill Park (0-10-0) had a 3-1 lead on Ballston Spa before Connor Preece went to work. Preece struck for two goals in the final eight minutes of the second half and added a goal on an overtime penalty kick to propel the Scotties (5-4-1) to victory. It was Preece's second consecutive hat trick, as he also tallied three times in Ballston Spa's 4-0 victory over Shaker Monday.

Averill Park built a 2-0 first-half lead on goals by Nick Hess and Dylan Larkin. Ballston Spa got one back before halftime when Nick Comiskey scored off a Preece assist, but Noah Madden tallied early in the second half to re-establish Averill Park's two-goal cushion.

Ballston Spa goaltender Evan Mendez made 10 saves to keep his team in the game. Averill Park netminder Brandon Westfall also stopped 10 shots.

In Saratoga Springs, Guilderland (6-2-2) got a goal from Nick Iuorno with 20 seconds left in regulation to defeat the Blue Streaks (3-7-0).

Morgan Smith scored in the fourth minute of the first half to get Saratoga on the board first. Guilderland tied it in the 25th minute on Vito Mesiti's goal and took a 2-1 lead on a penalty kick by Iuorno 13 minutes into the second half. Smith knotted the score at 2 when his free kick deflected off a Guilderland defender into the net.
