Colonie storms up the standings

Five-game winning streak catapults Garnet Raiders into second place

— The Colonie boys soccer team is moving up the Suburban Council South Division standings.

The Garnet Raiders (8-3-0, 12 standings points) defeated Ballston Spa and Shaker last week to extend their winning streak to five games and move a half-point ahead of Guilderland (6-2-3, 11.5 points) into second place in the South Division standings.

Colonie’s streak was in jeopardy last Thursday when Ballston Spa (5-5-1, 9 points) jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Lucas Audi and Connor Preece scored in the first 23 minutes for the Scotties.

Tommy Osipitan started the Colonie comeback when he headed Massimo Smiroldo’s corner kick into the Ballston Spa goal late in the first half. Paulino Curto tied the game early in the second half, and Uyiosa Omorogbe gave the Garnet Raiders the lead with less than 18 minutes left.

Colonie took early control of its game against Shaker (4-5-2, 8.5 points) last Friday in Latham. The Garnet Raiders scored three times in a 10-minute span, and the defense did the rest in posting the shutout.

Osipitan led the way with a hat trick, and Omorogbe added a goal and two assists for Colonie.

The Garnet Raiders sought their sixth conse-cutive victory Tuesday when they visited Mohon-asen. They return home Friday to play Averill Park before hitting a critical stretch when they face the two other teams vying for the South Division title — Bethlehem (7-0-3, 13.5 points), the current first place team, Oct. 18 and Guilderland Oct. 24.

Shaker moved back into North Division competition Tuesday when it hosted Ballston Spa. The Blue Bison play Burnt Hills-Ballston (5-5-1, 9 points) Lake Thursday night at Union College as part of a doubleheader with the girls soccer teams from both schools.
