Liz Batchelder and Meghan Heck needed three sets to defeat Academy's No. 1 doubles team of Eliza Meigher and Natalie Cheung 7-6, 2-6, 6-0. BH-BL's No. 2 doubles team of Sarah Drexinger and Kristin Parker eased past Academy's Ariella Haas and Alexandra Iankoulska 6-1, 6-2.
Nicole Kellogg, Maria Visker and Hannah Schrader all won their singles matches in straight sets for the Lady Spartans. Kellogg defeated Mia DiCaprio 6-2, 6-0, while Visker knocked off Taylor West 6-4, 6-3. Schrader beat Ashley Becker 6-0, 6-1.
Girls volleyball
Shaker pushed defending Section II Class AA girls volleyball champion Shenendehowa to the limit before the Plainswomen pulled out a 3-2 victory in Thursday's Suburban Council match.
After Shen (14-1) won the first game 25-16, Shaker (7-8) responded by taking the next two games 25-15 and 25-21. The Plainswomen avoided the upset by winning the final two games by scores of 25-16 and 25-23.
Girls swimming
The Shenendehowa girls swim team eased past Shaker 99-79 in Thursday's Suburban Council duel meet in Latham.
Six individuals won their events to lead the Plainswomen (8-1). Annie Ouyang finished first in the 200-yard individual medley, while sisters Olivia and Julia Samson took first place in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle, respectively. Bridget Geary (200-yard freestyle), Kathryn Jerwann (diving) and Emma Rupert (500-yard freestyle) also won their events.
Sarah Leach (50-yard freestyle), Kristen Moras (100-yard backstroke) and Canon Crummey (100-yard breaststroke) had individual victories for Shaker (1-7).
