GUILDERLAND Another game, another late game-winning goal.
Meghan Doyle scored off a rebound with 33 seconds left in regulation to give Niskayuna a 2-1 victory over Guilderland in Saturday's Suburban Council girls soccer game.
It's the fourth consecutive game that Niskayuna (5-0) has won with a goal in the final 10 minutes of the second half and the second time during that span in which the final goal came with 33 seconds left.
"I don't know [why it happens]," said Niskayuna coach Bryce Colby. "I guess we have kids who can finish. It just takes us so many chances to finish."
Guilderland (3-1) entered Saturday's game as the surprise story in the Suburban Council. The Lady Dutch defeated traditional league powers Bethlehem and Shenendehowa in the first 10 days of the season before running into Niskayuna.
"We hadn't beaten Shen and Bethlehem in the same year in decades, so we were pumped," said first-year Guilderland coach Curtis Snyder.
Niskayuna took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Doyle scored off a feed from Casey Barsh, but Guilderland grabbed the momentum seconds before halftime when Laura Knapp tallied off a pass from Lauren Kogelmann.
"It was a nice time to get one because we had been up there a few times and gotten unlucky," said Snyder.
The second half was a seesaw affair as both teams had good scoring chances. Niskayuna goaltender Katie Hartlage made a couple of key saves, while her Guilderland counterpart, Jenna Cubello, made a nice stop on a shot by Doyle.
Niskayuna had the most successful offensive push, though. Anka Parzych -- who had scored her team's three previous game-winning goals -- took an initial shot that Cubello stopped. The rebound initially came to Kaleigh Higgins, who took a shot that bounced off a Guilderland defender. However, that rebound found Doyle's feet, and the sophomore forward tapped it into the empty net to give the Silver Warriors the lead for good.
