Boys lacrosse: Niskayuna ends Jamesville-DeWitt's streak

Goldstock scores five goals in the Silver Warriors' road win

For the first time in nearly three years, the Jamesville-DeWitt boys lacrosse team did not get to celebrate a win after the final whistle, and the Niskayuna Silver Warriors were responsible.

Niskayuna (3-0) knocked off the two-time defending Class B state champions 17-10 Saturday on J-D's home turf to snap the Red Rams 45-game win streak.

The Silver Warriors took advantage of an inexperienced J-D defense and never trailed throughout the contest.

“They were definitely in control of this game,” J-D head coach Jamie Archer said. “There’s no doubt about it. They came out hungry, and I think they came out hungrier than us.”

Junior attack Luke Goldstock led Niskayuna with five goals, and seniors Matt Sexton and Tanner McIvor added three goals apiece to power the Silver Warriors attack.

“We shot the ball pretty well and that was the key,” Niskayuna head coach Mike Vorgang said. “We were dodging from all spots on the field, and we actually shot the bell well. And I think that was the biggest key today.”

Niskayuna jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but J-D knotted the game up behind an assist and a goal by attack Justin Diamond. But with just 40 seconds left in the first quarter, Silver Warriors midfielder Blake Pfohl ripped a shot into the top left corner to give Niskayuna a 3-2 lead after the first 12 minutes.

The Silver Warriors then grabbed control of the game with a big second quarter. J-D scored early to tie the game at 3-3, but Niskayuna rattled off four straight goals against the new-look Red Rams defense that has just one returning starter from last year.

“We’ve got a totally brand new defense from last year’s team,” Archer said. “We’ve got one starter returning, and that’s really the difference. They will learn from this.”
