The Shaker baseball team built a big lead and then fended off a furious rally to defeat Saratoga Springs 16-12 in Wednesday's Suburban Council baseball game in Saratoga.
The Blue Bison (3-0 league, 4-0 overall) scored seven runs in the top of the fourth inning to grab a 12-0 lead. Saratoga (1-2, 4-2) made things interesting when it scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to close the gap to 15-12, but the Blue Streaks got no closer.
Jason Gallacchi had three hits including a double, and he drove in three runs for Shaker. Connor Montagne tripled, singled and scored three runs, and Eric Egan reached base five times and scored three times.
Dan Rittenhouse doubled twice and drove in three runs for Saratoga. Kris Muller, Casey Kerr and Alex Chandler also had two hits apiece.
In other Suburban Council baseball action Wednesday, Shenendehowa (3-0) eased past Ballston Spa (0-3) 9-1. The Plainsmen racked up 10 hits as they kept pace with Shaker for the North Division lead.
Colin Grande had four hits for Shen including a triple and a double, while Mike Cuttita added a home run. Jesse Bush tripled for Ballston Spa.
