— Rookie Eric Macknight had his sights set on setting a new course record at Sunday's Delmar Dash.

The recent Keene State graduate fell short of his goal, but not of winning the annual 5-mile road race.

Macknight took to the lead from the starting line and never let go as he earned first place with a time of 25:21 -- less than one minute off the record pace of 24:43 set in 1989.

"That's how I get out," said Macknight, who moved to Clifton Park last year after taking a job at GlobalFoundries. "A lot of races, I like to get out quick and then settle in. You can break some runners if you break away in the first 800 meters."

Macknight said he and fellow Albany Running Exchange teammate Jeff Goupil each had a goal of setting the course record, but the warm and humid weather conditions made it difficult for them to keep their pace.

"It was definitely not the ideal conditions to go after the course record," said Macknight.

Albany's Alex Paley placed second overall with a time of 25:48, and Albany's Kevin Treadway finished third with a time of 25:58. Both Paley and Treadway won their respective age divisions.

On the women's side, Schenectady's Emily Bryans won her third Delmar Dash title in the last four years with a time of 29:43. Clifton Park's Shelly Binsfeld was second with a time of 30:21, and Guilderland's Gretchen Oliver finished third with a time of 31:17.

"It feels great, but I suffer no delusions," said Bryans, who had to pull out of last year's Delmar Dash after straining her hamstring at the four-mile mark. "There are a pack of open division women runners who are coming up quickly. Within the next few years, they should be the dominant runners."
