Twilight League team overcomes opening round loss to win national tournament

The Albany Athletics won their first Stan Musial World Series title by beating the Tampa Elite Rays 7-5 in Sunday's championship game in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

The Athletics overcame an opening round loss to the Northwest (Tex.) Wildcats 3-2 to reach the championship game. Albany downed the Stratford (Conn.) Storm 10-2 and shut out the Cincinnati Cobalts 3-0 to get back into contention. Ben Paniccia had five hits and three RBI in the win against Cincinnati.

Albany met Tampa in the fifth round of the tournament and pulled out a 5-2 victory. Greg Sulz's two-run single highlighted a five-run fourth inning for the Athletics.

Albany had another shot at the Northwest Wildcats in Sunday's semifinal round and took advantage with a 3-2 victory to reach the finals against Tampa.

The Stan Musial World Series title caps another successful season for the Athletics. They won the Twilight League title for the third consecutive year and compiled an overall record of 44-6.
