Friday round-up: Shen hockey picks up first win

Marr's second goal lifts Plainsmen past Mamaroneck in tourney opener

The Shenendehowa hockey team earned its first win of the season by beating Mamaroneck 4-2 in the opening round of the Don Kauth Memorial Tournament Friday in Clifton Park.

Kyle Marr’s goal less than five minutes into the second period gave the Plainsmen (1-2-0) a 3-2 lead. Max Papele added an insurance goal in the second minute of the third period.

Marr had two goals, and goaltender Brian Walter stopped 25 shots for Shen. Mamaroneck goaltender Tom Brill had 23 saves.

In Capital District High School Hockey League action, Christian Brothers Academy pulled away for a 6-1 victory over South Glens Falls/Hudson Falls at the Albany County Hockey Facility in Colonie.

Zach Swanteck scored the first three goals for the Brothers (2-2-1), and Nick Makarowsky contributed a goal and an assist. John Basset and Grant Stockman also tallied.

Boys basketball

Saratoga Springs improved its record to 3-0 with Friday’s 59-50 Suburban Council boys basketball victory over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

Chris Byno scored 20 points and dished out four assists for the Blue Streaks. John Rach had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds, and Noah Arciero added eight points and two steals.

Rob Knightes paced BH-BL (0-1) with 20 points in Gary Bynon’s debut as the Spartans’ head coach. Bynon replaced George Dudas, who stepped down earlier in the week due to health concerns, according to athletic director Bob McGuire.

Austin Nydegger chipped in with 11 points, and Eric Dillon added 10 points for the Spartans.

Girls basketball

The Shaker girls basketball team eased past Ballston Spa 74-24 in its season opener Friday in Ballston Spa.

The Blue Bison (1-0) jumped out to a 23-2 lead after the first quarter, and they padded their advantage by holding the Scotties (1-2) to less than 10 points in each of the next three periods.

Madison Rowland paced Shaker with 18 points, while Jenni Barra netted nine points and Merrick Rowland and Adriene Gambles each added eight points. Jen Groat had eight points for Ballston Spa.
