Indoor track: Plante leads Colonie girls at Great Dane Classic

South Florida-bound senior wins two events in Sectional tune-up

Kyle Plante won two individual events to help the Colonie girls indoor track and field team take first place overall at Sunday’s Great Dane Invitational at the University at Albany.

Plante won the 300-meter dash with a time of 40.78 seconds and took first place in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.61 seconds for the Lady Raiders, who accumulated 66 team points.

Shaker’s Emily VanDenburgh turned in a pair of top-three finishes. VanDenburgh won the long jump with a distance of 17 feet, 7.75 inches, and she placed third in the 55-meter dash final with a time of 7.50 seconds.

Academy of Holy Names runners took first place in the 600, 1,000 and 1,500. Kaitlin Close won the 600 with a time of 1:39.82, Leah Triller earned the 1,000 title with a time of 3:00.27 and Catherin Maloy finished first in the 1,500 with a time of 4:42.82.

Bethlehem had a pair of victories in relay events. The 1,600 relay team of Carolyn Wagner, Shannon Haggerty, Jackie Kearney and Samantha Taillon won with a time of 4:13.28, and the 3,200 relay team of Christina Macfarlane, Sydney Shaw, Lindsay Cheu and Danika Jensen took first place with a time of 9:53.02.

Field event winners included Schalmont’s Isabella Borini (high jump), Colonie’s Kara Snyder (pole vault) and Shenendehowa’s Lundy Spinner (weight throw).

Shaker placed second to Colonie in the girls team standings with 48.5 points. Holy Names was third with 38 points, two points ahead of fourth-place Bethlehem.

Shaker dominated the boys’ side of the meet. The Blue Bison won the team title with 82 points, while Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake placed second with 51 points. Shen took third place with 45 points.

BH-BL’s Joe Carr and Schalmont’s Devon Willis each won a pair of individual events. Carr won the 55 dash with a time of 6.70 seconds and took first place in the 300 dash with a meet record-time of 36.79 seconds, while Willis earned victories in the 55 hurdles (8.09 seconds) and the triple jump (44 feet, 2.5 inches). Shen’s Mark Thomas swept the throwing events by winning the shot put (49-6.75) and the weight throw (53-7).
